The Academy of Art University was established in San Francisco in 1929 by Richard S. Stephens, a fine art painter who had accepted the position of Creative Director for Sunset Magazine. Assisted by his wife, Mrs. Clara Stephens, he opened the new school in a rented loft at 215 Kearny Street to teach advertising art. In a few years, a distinguished faculty of practicing art and design professionals was assembled and the school’s philosophy was formulated: hire established professionals to teach future professionals. In 1933 the curriculum was expanded to include Fashion Illustration, and in 1936 a Fine Art Department was added.

Today the University has nearly 12,000 students, making it the largest private school of art and design in the country. Students now have the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Associate of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Architecture or a Certificate Program, with over 30 areas of academic emphasis.

As an internationally recognized school for the performing and visual arts—film, theater, art, dance, music and writing—the CalArts artistic philosophy places an emphasis on an exploration of new paths beyond conventional boundaries.

The CalArts educational philosophy is based on close collegial interaction between teachers and students—in class, in production and in one-to-one mentoring. This approach combines rigorous instruction with individualized attention, a process that empowers students to define their own personal objectives—and to develop and refine their own distinctive artistic voices. Given more creative freedom than at traditional art schools and conservatories, our students, in turn, are self-motivated, passionate, and deeply committed to their work. They are accepted into CalArts primarily on the basis of their artistic ability; once here, they produce art from day one.

How Long does it take to put together a book? It takes thousands of ideas. It takes hundreds of ads. It takes 15-20 samples.

At the Chicago Portfolio School, it takes a year. A year of your undivided attention working on a year’s worth of great assignments. A year with the latest software comping up the best of your ideas. A year of showing work to award-winning instructors and tutors. Granted, a year is not a whole lot of time to put together a great book and time passes quickly. So we’ll have to work fast. And work smart.

But if you work your ass off, a year is all you need.

Born of a pioneering spirit, Massachusetts College of Art and Design is the nation’s first independent public college of art and design and the first art school to grant a degree.

MassArt’s founders dared to imagine a better future for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to believe the path to it lay in creativity. Their goal in establishing the Massachusetts Normal Art School was to educate students in the creative process, which would in turn lead to the development of the mind, body, and spirit.

The institution they created was dedicated to producing drawing teachers required in schools throughout the commonwealth, while at the same time training professional artists, designers, and architects. It proudly opened its doors in 1873 to anyone with talent and the will to succeed-at a time when access for everyone was all too uncommon.

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Perhaps it’s the above quote that best characterizes the tiny world-class branding school tucked into the kudzu at the dead end of Bennett Street, in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a philosophy embodied and propagated by founder Gemma Gatti, and by Hank Richardson, long-time teacher and, now, the school’s president.

Sometimes called the Perfect Storm, Richardson rarely sleeps. Each student is a mission, and every minute matters. He builds further on the ideals of the Bauhaus, eschewing dogma, and nudging students toward the day they become their own best teachers. As a result, the school is not defined by the strength of its programs or its tough curriculum, as important as those things are. Instead, it is defined by its spirit—its passion, which can’t be contained by the cinder-block walls.

Students don’t merely learn about design, advertising, photography, illustration, or media architecture; they learn to frame their values and to filter all their work through those; and they learn to value themselves and their lives, to embrace their responsibility to the world and to their own happiness. They learn that if it can be imagined, it can be created—and that they should never put limits on their imaginations.
